Agricultural Market Performance and Determinants of Fertilizer Use in Ethiopia AgEcon
Demeke, Mulat; Kelly, Valerie A.; Jayne, Thomas S.; Said, Ali; Le Vallee, Jean-Charles; Chen, H..
This paper examines how the fertilizer sector in general, and farmers’ demand for fertilizer in particular, has evolved since the introduction of fertilizer sector reforms in Ethiopia. There is much debate in the agricultural development literature about whether fertilizer use in Africa is constrained primarily by poor input distribution systems, by farmers’ lack of knowledge concerning the benefits and correct use of fertilizer, or by lack of effective demand because the product is simply not profitable enough. This paper looks at each of these issues in an effort to understand the relative importance of the different constraints and how well current policies are addressing the problems. It attempts to identify additional policy measures needed to...

Does Scale Matter? Cost Effectiveness of Agricultural Nutrient Abatement When Target Level Varies AgEcon
Iho, Antti.
Agricultural production is facing high requirements on nutrient runoff reduction. Furthermore, the reductions should by done efficiently. For instance, the European Water Framework Directive calls for cost-effectiveness from schemes of measures to fulfill the target of good water quality in European river basins. In this paper we analyse the implications of target level variation on efficiency properties of agricultural phosphorus abatement. We analyse the robustness of cost-effectiveness as the scheme of measures is adopted from another, identical river basin with different target level on total phosphorus abatement. We find that even between homogeneous regions the cost-effective scheme of measures is unique for all target levels of reduction, and that...

Efficiency of foliar application of sparingly soluble sources of boron and zinc in citrus Scientia Agricola
Macedo,Luiza Oliveira; Mattos Júnior,Dirceu; Jacobassi,Rodrigo; Hippler,Franz Walter Rieger; Quaggio,José Antônio; Boaretto,Rodrigo Marcelli.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated leaf supply of zinc (Zn) and boron (B) using either soluble or sparingly soluble fertilizers in young sweet orange trees. Three experiments were set up in a greenhouse to compare two sources and four doses (control, low, adequate and high) of fertilizers as follows: (i) Experiment I (B): boric acid and calcium borate; (ii) Experiment II (Zn): Zn sulfate and Zn oxide; and (iii) Experiment III (B + Zn): boric acid + Zn Sulfate and Zn Borate. The sparingly soluble sources were effective in increasing the Zn and B leaf concentration. Dry matter of the aerial part increased 18 % with B applications in adequate concentration independent of the B fertilizer sources. In contrast, trees did not grow well with applications of adequate...

Incentives for Fertilizer Use in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review of Empirical Evidence on Fertilizer Response and Profitability AgEcon
Yanggen, David; Kelly, Valerie A.; Reardon, Thomas; Naseem, Anwar.
This research addresses two questions: Why is fertilizer not yet fulfilling its potential as a major stimulus to agricultural productivity in SSA? What can be done to improve the situation? Our answers are based on an extensive review of fertilizer response, profitability, and policy literature as well as some analysis of crop budgets and aggregate national statistics on fertilizer consumption. Much of the debate about fertilizer use in SSA focuses on two issues: whether the profit incentive is adequate and, if so, whether farmers have the capacity to access and use it.

Macro Trends and Determinates of Fertilizer Use in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Naseem, Anwar; Kelly, Valerie A..
To reverse the declining trends in soil fertility levels in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the use of fertilizers and other land augmenting technologies needs to increase. While overall fertilizer consumption in SSA has increased by as much as 200% from 1970 levels, the growth has been highly variable across countries, regions and time. Fertilizer use is significantly lower than that observed in other parts of the developing world, especially Asia, where fertilizer (along with other productivity enhancing technologies) has been credited with the large increases in yields. Moreover data for the 1990s suggests that overall fertilizer consumption in SSA has been declining. Designing appropriate policies and interventions to stimulate fertilizer demand and supply,...

Smallholder marketed surplus and input use under transactions costs: maize supply and fertilizer demand in Kenya AgEcon
Arega, D.A.; Manyong, Victor M.; Omanya, G.; Mignouna, H.D.; Bokanga, M.; Odhiambo, George D..
This paper assessed the effects of transactions costs—relative to price and non-price factors—on smallholder marketed surplus and input use in Kenya. A selectivity model was used that accounts not only for the effects of fixed and variable transactions costs but also for the role of assets, technology, and support services in promoting input use and generating a marketable surplus. Output supply and input demand responses to changes in transactions costs and price and non-price factors were estimated and decomposed into market entry and intensity. The results showed that while transactions costs indeed have significant negative effects on market participation, cost-mitigating innovations—such as group marketing—are also emerging to mitigate the costs of...

The Choice of Tillage, Rotation, and Soil Testing Practices: Economic and Environmental Implications AgEcon
Wu, JunJie; Babcock, Bruce A.; Lakshminarayan, P.G..
Which management practices farmers adopt has a significant effect on agricultural pollution. Research has analyzed factors influencing adoption of a single management practice. But often adoption decisions about many practices are made simultaneously, which suggests use of a polychotomous-choice model to analyze decisions. We apply such a model to the choice of alternative management practices on cropland in the Central Nebraska Basin and control for self-selection and the interaction among alternative practices. We use the results of the choice model to estimate the economic and environmental effect so adopting alternative combinations of management practices. Our results suggest that crop rotation and soil N testing are complementary practices, perhaps...
